I’m gonna win a lot of heat for this, but I’m a fan of Pia Zadora. I don’t judge she’s the greatest actress or personality or even singer, but there’s something about her that makes me giggle. Obvious, she’s been in a lot of questionable movies (to my count, her husband financed four of them – BUTTERFLY, FAKE-OUT, THE LONELY LADY, and VOYAGE OF THE ROCK ALIENS), but she seems to have a dismal sense of humor playing in all of them, like she’s in on the joke. Maybe she was or maybe she wasn’t, but FINALLY her “first” film, BUTTERFLY, has been officially released on DVD. I say “officially” because JER Films has had a bootleg DVD release on the market for several years now, mastered from the early 80s Vestron Laserdisc, a better source than a VHS tape minted from the same transfer but serene a bad choice considering how blurry, blown-out, and speckly the print and noisy Laserdisc pressing were.

And now the official release from Industrial Films, a stamp I’ve never heard of, in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen from a fresh hi-def master, complete with a 45-minute featurette and commentary track with Pia herself! To say I’m stunned is an understatement, but I felt I should let the other dozen or so people in the world who might be eager in this release know of its quality.

The mastering isn’t perfect, as there is a queer ghosting grunt which appears to be from terrible conversion from the hi-def master (I’ve seen this on some other independent DVD releases), and the audio commentary is woefully out of synchronization for the first half of the film (the film’s audio is mixed in coarse and it reveals a grand 3-4 second gap in sync) . I peaceful expected FAR worse than I got, and I’m very jubilant with this disc. Even the packaging is quite nice with a slipcover that has the BUTTERFLY logo in raised red foil. The abet camouflage gives a url, Welcome to butterfly-movie.com!, that is nothing more than a place registered for selling domain names! Strange…

DVDTown is the only review I’ve been able to come by for the DVD so far, and I consider it was a shrimp harsh. If the reviewer only knew how awful the previous video master was…

I hope that more of Ms. Zadora’s oeuvre is on its arrangement to DVD, but from what she states in the commentary track I doubt it. “The other movies sucked,” she says, citing FAKE-OUT as abominable and THE LONELY LADY as being intentionally over-the-top but it ended up being, “what it was.” No mention of VOYAGE OF THE ROCK ALIENS at all. *sigh* The face of the valid DVD has a 2008 copyright credit for Par-Par Productions, from which I can only surmise Ms. Zadora had something to do with allowing this film to be released. She seems to have a agreeable sense of humor on her commentary track about herself and her films, but I’m not convinced she thinks putting out a special edition of THE LONELY LADY or VOYAGE OF THE ROCK ALIENS is a beneficial concept (but Pia, if you’re reading this, I mediate they deserve DVD releases!!!)

If you are on the fence about this release, Pick IT! Some trouble obviously went into this one, and I only hope sales figures convince Ms. Zadora to let some of her other films out of the vault. No, I won’t beget my breath, but I never expected this one to procure released either.

I posted comparison pics here:

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htf/sd-dvd-film-documentary/277189-butterfly-1982-official-release.html

I remember reading about Pia years ago. Apparently her husband (ex? ) has millions of dollars and was willing to manufacture her a well known movie star and invest in her career. However, there was a great backlash of those who felt she was paying her plan to stardom. Her movies were panned and many critized her abilities.

Tonight, I watched Butterfly, and I plan it was riveting. Pia stars as Kady, a young woman who returns to the father she never knew and attempts to accept him to take silver from the mine he is guarding. Stacy Keech plays the father and other talented actors like James Francisco round out the cast. Pia looks dazzling and convinced me with her acting. She has talent, looks, ability and star quality. She is totally believable as Kady, generating heat, youth and a intellectual of what she needs and how to obtain it all at once.

The movie includes a bonus segment where the actors talk about the movie and Pia aloof looks awesome 26 years later. She speaks very intelligently and represents herself well.

It seems that valid fame eluded Pia… and I wonder if without the money her husband build into her career and the resentment it caused, she would have accomplished her goals.

The box region is nothing like, 3 Bourne movies with few bonus material on each disk. I like it since I fancy the movies. If you are looking for hours of extra pronounce, packaged in a gorgeous looking folded up box region, also containing posters or portray arts, this is not it.

The dismal truth is, I only got into this whole Bourne craze last year…I didn’t even discover Ultimatum! Of course, my cousin understanding that was absolutely crazy so she forced me into having a Bourne marathon with her.

And I absolutely, positively, LOVED it. And when I absolutely Esteem something, I HAVE to take it.

It’s a sincere treat to be able to have all three movies together in a runt spot you can hold up and peep whenever you like. All the current extras for each movie are included so that’s a bonus.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Bourne Trilogy! Click Here

But why only four star? Well, I was slightly disappointed with the packaging of this boxset. For those who were wondering, there are no “bonus” features for this boxset – it’s basically a hard paper case with three slim DVD cases, each containing one disc, which has the widescreen version of the movie with extras. As one reviewer previously mentioned, if you’re looking for posters, cards etc., this won’t satisfy you.

The only thing I’m alarmed about is…what am I gonna do when the fourth Bourne movie comes out on DVD? Will they release another boxset? Will my like for Bourne manufacture me purchase that one too? Haha, we shall scrutinize…

Babe was a runaway success in 1995. It even got a best record nomination and in my mind should have won. This is a incredible movie, distinct to delight children from 2-100. Chris Noonan has created the recent farmyard parable. He deftly brings you into his world of talking animals centered around that most amicable of pigs, Babe. While the sheepdogs rule the farm, Babe warms the heart of sheep and dog alike, and eventually farmer Hoggett remarkable to the chagrin of his wife who is counting the days to the next tremendous feast. Ultimately Babe is spared as farmer Hoggett comes to realize he has a most fresh pig on his hands. Babe finds himself welcomed into the fold, rising to the ultimately dwelling of being able to advance into the house on heart-broken nights, at the expense of the house cat. All these animals are played wonderfully off each other. The voices couldn’t be better. Farmer Hoggett eventually puts Babe to the ultimate challenge, the gigantic sheepherding competition, which brings out a raucous reaction from the crowd. But Babe soon silences them. This movie has everything one could want in a children’s movie and more. It deserves its position among the classics of all time.

Several previous reviewers are dead-on. Babe, is of course, a clever, comical, touching movie. It’s one of the few movies that I and my 3-year ragged can both luxuriate in over and over. But the marketing jerks at Universal have seen fit to force several lengthy advertisements on you every time you try to peruse the movie. What’s more, they’ve coded them to be non-skippable, so you MUST sit through them every time you want to eye the movie (you can snappy forward, but you can’t skip over them) . This is offensive and intrusive in any dvd you’ve purchased (and arguably untrue as it’s not disclosed on the package), but it’s even worse with a movie like Babe that’s targeted largely at kids. First, it illustrates that Universal has outright contempt for parents’ rights to settle what types of films are, or are not, appropriate for their kids. Second, if you have a puny child who really wants to peruse Babe (or whatever), it’s difficult for them to understand why they should have to sit through 15 minutes of Universal’s marketing crap before the movie starts (something that’s not accurate with numerous other children’s DVD’s) . Shame, shame Universal. I’d back you to rent, download, pirate, or borrow this DVD rather than buying it, at least until Universal ceases its offensive, dishonest marketing tactics.

Fist of the North Star has been released multiple times on VHS and DVD in the US. It even has two different dubs (one by Streamline Pictures with Carl Macek of Robotech fame, and one by Manga Entertainment) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Fist of the North Star: The Movie! Click Here

In this release:

* The film is digitally restored. It actually looks a runt better than the unique release.

* The movie aloof goes into monochromatic mode during the most violent scenes – impartial like in all previous US releases.

* The recent US dub (Streamline) is conventional. The modern Japanese audio is also included.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Fist of the North Star: The Movie! Click Here

* There are also two sets of subtitles, one for the US dub dialog and one that is a faithful translation of the Japanese dialog. Before reading the Japanese subtitles, I never realized how many liberties Streamline took with the script. It’s almost like watching a different movie!

* The Japanese theatrical ending is old, which is the same ending all previous US releases had. (There is a Japanese home-video ending where Ken and Raoh’s duel ends in a map)

* We salvage the Japanese theatrical teasers & trailers.

* The 80’s hair-metal song “Heart of Madness” is liberally applied in the menus.

Again, this is probably the best release of this film in the US. If you need to replace your decade-old copy of the VHS tape, this is your best choice.

First, let’s catch the beneficial out of the contrivance. The recount quality on this disc is absolutely extraordinary. After watching VHS copies and fan-subbed digital versions for years, it’s truly eye-opening to survey Hokuto no Ken looking like this. Everything looks incredibly orderly. Sound is also quite pleasant, so the A/V package is legal on.

But, let’s gain to the terrible. Extras are glowing mighty nil, except for some trailers (which are thankfully also up to the same quality as the feature), a bios portion for the characters and a gallery. There are quite a few spelling errors, mostly with the intention things are romanized from the Japanese text, and mis-translations in the English subs for the Japanese track (there are also subs for the English announce track, too) . A lot of these are very irksome when you are outmoded to translations that have been former for a long time and feeble by other folk that are a lot more fluent than I am. And shame on Toei for not bothering to uncensor the more graphic kills in the movie. Not only is it impartial slothful on their portion, but it also throws off the movie by switching from the mountainous represent quality of the rest of the film to the grainy, low-quality censored stuff. This may have caused some PTA folks in Japan to blow their tops in ‘86, but it’s now 23 years later. Give us an uncut print.

It’s nice to contemplate this accumulate a decent DVD release, but it’s certainly not worth $30. Select it up if it falls under $20; that’s what I’m waiting to do.

Here’s a movie for dog lovers, the elderly, children of divorce, FOBs (Friends of Birds), dilapidated Boy Scouts, people yearning for adventure, and anyone who has ever loved… and lost. Up is for everyone. It made me laugh out loud, and it made me shout.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Up! Click Here

I plan it would be tough for Up to match the emotional power of Wall-E. The two Pixar films are similar in their lack of dialogue in the first act, which helps deepen the emotional impact. Up begins with Carl, a vexed young boy star-struck by a renowned explorer; and kookie Ellie, who has a similar obsession. The two kids become speedily friends, and issue to one day recede to Venezuela’s Paradise Falls. After getting married, they engage their dream home and fix it up, hoping to maintain it with children. Carl and Ellie’s life together from childhood through worn age is depicted, silently, with delicacy and subtlety. The first 15 minutes is like a celebration of a blissful marriage, and you truly feel Carl’s damage when he is left alone. He sits slumped in his chair, talking to the house as if it is the missing Ellie.

When developers cessation in on Carl’s beloved home, he decides to fulfill his promise to Ellie and proceed to Paradise Falls. A ancient balloon vendor, Carl lifts his home with hundreds of knowing balloons. Stowing away on the porch is Russell, a chunky, valorous kid trying to rep a scouting badge.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Up! Click Here

After landing in Paradise Falls, the feeble man and the microscopic boy are joined by a golden retriever named Dug who can talk with his collar, and a expansive rare bird that bonds with Russell (he names her “Kevin”) . Dug is priceless: spot-on for every dog that ever lived, including an obsession with squirrels. Through a series of terminate calls and adventures, the quartet vanquishes a villain, saving the day. And Russell earns his scouting badge.

In the process, Carl learns to let go of his sunless mourning for Ellie, and live life again. When this happens, a truly magical thing happens. Before, Carl’s craggy face is gray and monochromatic. At the moment of his transformation, Carl’s face is awash in color, and he is surrounded by gorgeous hues. It reminded me of The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy steps out of her gray world and into a candy-colored Munchkinland. Carl, too, enters a whole current world.

Up is a deeply emotional film, plump of truth. It’s the year’s best film. Gather another triumph for Pixar.

Someday, Pixar is going to do it — they’re going to execute an emotionally uninspiring, lackluster enchanting movie. But in the meantime, they’re unruffled putting out exquisite absorbing movies like “Up,” which defies the usual kid-movie conventions by starring a crotchety venerable man. It’s a charming, fun small adventure yarn with flying dogs and balloon-powered houses, but underlying it is a bittersweet itsy-bitsy epic about loss and cherish.

As a child, the troubled Carl Fredricksen bonded with the oddball Ellie over their shared like of adventure, the explorer Charles Muntz, and Paradise Falls. They later married, recede into their “clubhouse” together, and lived a long, sadly childless life together. When Ellie died, she had never fulfilled her dream of going to Paradise Falls.

Now crotchety, alone and harassed by a precise estate developer, Carl (Ed Asner) is finally ordered to a retirement home. But he isn’t going quietly — instead he attaches thousands of balloons to his house and floats it away toward South America. But he accidentally takes an eager, naive Wilderness Explorer (a thinly-veiled Boy Scout) named Russell (Jordan Nagai) along for the inch. Terrible kid was unbiased trying to come by an “assisting the elderly” badge.

And the jungle chase to Paradise Falls turns out to have some surprising obstacles: a great emulike bird that Russell names Kevin, a talking dog named Dug (”I am jumping on you, bird!”), and a mysterious outmoded man who lives deep in the heart of the jungle. Turns out the faded guy is very familiar to Carl — and to hold Kevin, he’s willing to sacrifice Carl and Russell.

Industry experts were babbling about how “Up” wouldn’t be as common as the previous Pixar movies, because the protagonist is basically a crusty feeble coot. Well, shows what they know. It ended up becoming one of those classic movies that somehow appeals to all ages — while the humor and action appeal to children, adults can indulge in Carl’s worship for his lost wife, and his insensible realization that he’s clinging to the past.

In fact, the first ten minutes are some of the most heart-tugging, quietly bittersweet scenes I’ve seen in a long time. Without a word, they point to all the ups and downs of a realistic marriage — joys, sorrows (Ellie’s inability to have children), growing faded together, and finally loss.

But it’s not a depressing movie by any stretch — in fact, it’s like a childhood fantasy arrive to life, complete with a floating house suspended on hundreds of balloons, and biplanes piloted by a talking dog army.. Plenty of huge dialogue (”Do you want to play a game? It’s called Glimpse Who Can Go the Longest Without Saying Anything.” “Frigid! My mom loves that game!”) and an action-packed climax in an venerable airship.

Ed Asner is absolutely perfect as ubergrouch Carl — crotchety, grumpy, and obvious to fulfill his wife’s lifelong dream, but gradually realizing he’s clinging to the past. Nagai is equally perfect as Carl’s polar opposite: a naive, chattery Scout who is obvious to reunite Kevin with her baby chicks. And the utterly adorable Dug and the other dogs deserve special contemplate. These creatures are utterly hilarious — they talk (”I hid under your porch because I like you”) and act the method dogs would if they talked. Three words: cone of shame.

The two-disc edition is going to have some very nice extras, but once again people with regular-def DVDs are going to catch shafted because the Blu-ray edition will have a bunch of unfamiliar stuff. Grr. As for this one, there’s a digital copy, the director’s audio commentary, kinda-alternate-ending “The Many Endings of Muntz,” and the documentary “Adventure Is Out There” about the research for this movie.

There are also a pair of adorable though-provoking shorts. “Partly Cloudy” has a much-abused stork having to screech potentially cross baby creatures from a kind but clueless cloud. And “Dug’s Special Mission” is a sort of backstory for the adorable Dug, explaining what the heck he was doing before he met up with Carl and Russell.

“Up” continues Pixar’s running tally of gloriously provocative, emotionally layered movies that the entire family can be pleased. With that, I have only one more thing to say… SQUIRREL!
