Elegiac and atmospheric, Shakespeare Wallah was the feature film that put Merchant Ivory Productions on the international movie map, winning them great critical acclaim, and is now recognized as a classic. Starring Shashi Kapoor, Madhur Jaffrey, and a young Felicity Kendal, the film’s inspiration lies in the real-life adventures of Ms. Kendal’s family as a traveling theater group in India during the final days of English colonial rule. They try to uphold British tradition by staging Shakespearean plays but are unable to compete with the wildly popular Bollywood film industry. The film also traces the developing relationship between the acting troupe’s young ingenu, Lizzie (Kendal), and Sanju (Kapoor), a wealthy Indian playboy. But their romance is beset by hindrances, not the least being the machinations of Manjula (Jaffrey), a fiery Indian film star who is also in love with Sanju.

With the help of his marshal, Gene must then out-gun the nefarious renegades who want to kidnap the brides-to-be for a rival mining camp and take over the town. Featuring Gail Davis as one of the lovely ladies, Pat Buttram as Gene’s trustworthy deputy, and Champion, World’s Wonder Horse. Includes original theatrical trailer.

This compilation represents 30 years of work from independent filmmaker David Markey. From his beginnings as a pre-teen experimental film auteur to his music videos for major labels, Cut Shorts displays Markeys uniqu and askewed view. Markey employs a frenetic Documentary-style approach mixed with punk fiction on the dime. He feverishly produced these backyard films much like the Do-It-Yourself attitude found in punk zines and bands. Featuring Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Jordan & Jennifer Schwartz, & Sofia Coppola Music by Devo, Ciccone Youth, Sonic Youth, The Shaggs, The Posies, Abby Travis & others.

An air of gothic romanticism pervades every aspect of this remarkable film, based on a tru story from the turn of the 20th century. In its torrid plot, one can hear the icy restraints of the Victorian era cracking. Diane Keaton is uncannily perfect as Kate Soffel, wife of a priggish prison warden (Edward Herrmann). She’s funny and touching playing what used to be called a “neurasthenic”–a nervous, depressed woman with mysterious physical ailments. When the film opens, Kate is just recovering from a three-month-long spell, and back at work preaching to the inmates in her husband’s prison. Whom should she encounter but dangerous death row inmate Ed Biddle, in the irresistible person of Mel Gibson. The forbidden affair that blossoms between them is feverishly exciting, but the film operates on myriad other levels. Director Gillian Armstrong (My Brilliant Career) and screenwriter Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia) have much to say about capital punishment, and about the miserable fate of women in this repressive society who dare to act on their passions. There’s nothing morally clear-cut in this movie, which is what makes it consistently fascinating. Kate and Ed’s romance is as right as it is wrong; we never really know how to feel about either of them. The film’s stunning cinematography and superb period details are exhilarating, from the towering, bleak beauty of the prison to the gorgeous panoramic chase scenes of horse-drawn sleighs in the snow. –Laura Mirsky
Mrs. Soffel was mellifluous! You have to objectify this movie! A stupendous performance by Diane Keaton & Mel Gibson make Mrs. Soffel a “have to discover” movie!

This colorful depiction of life in a family of 12 children stars Clifton Webb as Frank Bunker Gilbreth, an eccentric father who prides himself on some truly unorthodox child-rearing methods. Based on the bestseller by two children of the real Mr. Gilbreth, this charming film co-starring Myrna Loy is “alive with big laughs” (Los Angeles Times).
Narrated by the oldest daughter (Jeanne Crain), the story follows a series of family crises over the years: from how the children over-whelmed their new school’s administration office, to the time they threw a hospital into chaos when they arrived for a mass tonsillectomy. There’s even a memorable encounter with a birth control advocate. Simultaneously hilarious and sentimental, “Cheaper by the Dozen is a family comedy in the trust sense.
Cheaper By the Dozen was grateful! You have to be sensible of this movie! A miraculous performance by Clifton Webb & Jeanne Crain make Cheaper By the Dozen a “should note” movie!
The remarkable cast includes Clifton Webb, Jeanne Crain, Myrna Loy, Betty Lynn, Edgar Buchanan. This cast just make Cheaper By the Dozen the more mind-boggling!
This follow-up to Warlock boasts more sophisticated visual effects, slicker production valus, and bigger (and bloodier) action, but fans of the original’s dry wit and tight story may be disappointed. It’s really more a rehash than a sequl. The Devil is up to his old tricks again, sending his favorite son (the title character) on a mission to recover six runes–ancient stones that will allow His Satanic Majesty to escape Hell and once again walk the Earth. Leading the forces of good are a group of modern-day druids and a pair of teenage lovers who have no idea they’ve been selected to save the world. There are some genuinely spooky moments, a few laughs, and some nice visual touches, but the scattershot script keeps throwing out one cool idea after another, hoping something sticks. On the other hand, if watching Julian Sands writhe on the ground spewing black blood sounds like a good time, this may be just the ticket. Gremlins star Zach Galligan has a cameo (as the boyfriend of the Warlock’s mom!) –Geof Miller
Warlock: The Armageddon was affable! You have to hazard this movie! A unheard-of performance by R.G. Armstrong & Dawn Ann Billings make Warlock: The Armageddon a “must pay a visit” movie!
The wondrous cast includes R.G. Armstrong, Dawn Ann Billings, Wren T. Brown, Gary Cervantes, Davis Gaines. This cast just make Warlock: The Armageddon the more spectacular!
Three generations of the Douglas clan–old-time star Kirk, Michael of Fatal Attraction and Wonder Boys, and movie newcomer Cameron–star in It Runs in the Family. Alex Gromberg (Michael) is a high-powered lawyer who works for a firm co-founded by his father Mitchell (Kirk), who’s recovering from a stroke, while Alex’s son Asher (Cameron) is dealing pot and flunking out of his senior year in college. The movie moves between the three men’s relationships with women and each other. Surprisingly, It Runs in the Family isn’t as much of a vanity project as it seems; though some implausible elements serve only to flatter the stars (wealthy lawyer Alex volunteers at a soup kitchen for the homeless, where a babelicious co-worker throws herself at him), most of the script is solidly written and the parent-child conflicts ring tru. Also featuring Bernadette Peters and Rory Culkin. –Bret Fetzer
